Charl Schwatzel back in the game

The European Tour begins its new year exactly where it finished the old one, in South Africa, but this time for the inaugural Joburg Open at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.
Following on from the successful staging of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek Golf Club and the South African Airways Open at Humewood Golf Club in December, the players return to action this week in the city of Johannesburg for the first tournament of 2007.

Carrying a prize fund of €1 million, the Joburg Open will see an expanded field of 200 play both the East and West courses at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington over the first two rounds, with the players moving to the East Course after the halfway cut, set at 70 plus ties.
Among the leading contenders for the €166,660 first prize is one of Johannesburg’s favourite golfing sons, Hi-Tec’s Charl Schwartzel, who seems to feature prominently every time The European Tour visits South Africa.

Schwartzel served notice of his prodigious talent on only his third European Tour start, when he finished joint third in the 2003 South African Airways Open, and the following year saw him capture his maiden title when he held off strong opposition including Ernie Els to win the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek.

Els responded by pushing his young challenger into second spot at Leopard Creek the following year and 22 year old Schwartzel found himself consigned to the bridesmaid’s role once again when, before Christmas, Spanish rookie Alvaro Quiros beat him by a stroke.

Now Schwartzel has the perfect opportunity to put December’s disappointment behind him and start 2007 with victory in front of supportive home galleries. However, with a further 15 European Tour winners in the field plus a large crop of talented newcomers, his task will not be an easy one.
Schwartzel, as the home grown favourite, will be hoping it belongs to him. He is wearing the V-Lite Typhoon II CDT.

Harrington Back to Business in Shanghai

Padraig Harrington has only had the briefest period to enjoy his European Tour Order of Merit success before getting back to business at the HSBC Champions tournament at Sheshan International Golf Club in China.
Just 11 days after becoming European Number One, the Irishman is back in action for the first event of The 2007 European Tour International Schedule.
“Obviously I won a week ago and I got a week's enjoyment,” said Harrington. “I suppose at the end of this week, it's possible we'll have a new European Number One. So it's interesting that it only lasts for such a short period. It's like a tournament win; it only lasts for a week.
“There's only one person who prefers more time, the guy who has won the Order of Merit. Everybody else is raring to get going for next year.”

Harrington still has five events left this year and is looking to continue his progression into 2007, with a Major the next step on the career ladder.
“I think throughout my career, ten years now, I've won every great tournament, all the way up to a world event and a Major. The Order of Merit probably sits in there just behind a Major win in terms of something you would want to achieve in your career. The natural progression would be a World Golf Championship event or Major next.”

First Harrington will be looking to get the better of a world-class field that includes ten of the top 20 players in the world, led by the top two in Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.
For Furyk it is his first visit to China, coming just a few days after finishing second in the Tour Championship on the US PGA Tour and winning the Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted score average.

“In the last month prior to the Tour Championship, I only played one week,” said Furyk. “So I was a little rusty going in, but I got better as the week went on and played well on the weekend to finish in second place.

“I've had a very good year and playing well and hopefully I can continue that this week.”
Woods will tee off in the company of Casey and Asian Tour Number One Jeev Milkha Singh of India, who won the biggest title of his career when he captured the Volvo Masters.“I'm obviously really excited to be paired with Tiger,” said Singh. “It's going to be the first time with me that I'm going to be playing with him, and hopefully I'm going to learn something from him and I want to see how he manages the golf course.”

Padraig Harrington beat the defending champion Tiger Woods at the second extra hole to win the Dunlop Phoenix tournament at Phoenix Country Club, Miyazaki, Japan. The 2006 European Tour Order of Merit winner climbs 3 places in the Official World Golf Ranking to 8th, returning to the World Top 10 after an absence of 15 months.

José Manuel Lara collected his maiden European Tour title with a wire-to-wire victory in the UBS Hong Kong Open. A final round of 69 for a 15 under par total of 265 earned the Spaniard a one stroke triumph over Filipino Juvic Pagunsan. Lara climbs 49 places to World Number 78.
John Senden won the MFS Australian Open by a stroke from US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy at Royal Sydney after a tournament best round of 65 on the last day. Senden climbs 29 positions to 74th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Bradford Vaughan won the Limpopo Classic at Polokwane Golf Club on the Sunshine Tour in Southern Africa and is now World Number 287.

Hi-Tec's Harrington claims Order of Merit

Padraig Harrington snatched his first European Order of Merit title after a dramatic final round at the Volvo Masters in Valderrama.

India's Jeev Milkha Singh was the shock winner of the tournament but all the attention was on a tumultuous battle for the European number one spot.
Paul Casey was in pole position until virtually the final shot of the day.
But when Sergio Garcia bogeyed the last Harrington moved into a tie for second place and the title was his.

Harrington, who put himself into contention by winning the dunhill links at St Andrews two weeks ago, set up a gripping climax to the day and season when he rolled in a 35ft putt on the 16th - a third birdie in six holes to put him joint third.
But, perhaps thinking he needed another birdie, he was then short with a bold approach to the long 17th and found the water.

The 35-year-old Dubliner, however, showed great courage to get up and down from the drop zone, holing an 8ft putt for par. He then had to repeat the trick on the last after missing the fairway with his drive.
That left him with a 69 and one-under total but minutes later he was up to the second place he needed as Garcia bogeyed the 13th and 14th.

I'm sure that most of you have already seen the Kit Kat advert with Hi-Tec sponsored Ian Woosnam. The storyline of the advert is as follows:

Colin Montgomerie is playing in a tournament and each time he is about to play a shot a person in the crowd uses his camera and takes a picture, causing Colin to fluff his shot and each time the shot is messed up he casts his famous grouchy stare into the crowd. As he is about to make a putt he is put off again, so walks over to his caddy takes off his visor and opens up a Kit Kat and breaks a finger of the bar in half just as Ian Woosnam is about to play his shot.

Harrington claims Dunhill victory

Padraig Harrington secured his 10th European Tour career title with success in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews.

Harrington carded a final round of 68 at the Old Course to wrap up a five-shot victory.
The first prize of £427,441 lifts the Irishman into second on the Order of Merit, £147,900 behind Paul Casey with two events remaining.

Casey closed with a 68 for a share of sixth place.
Harrington began the final round a shot behind Welshman Bradley Dredge but immediately wiped out that deficit with a birdie on the first.

Dredge went back in front with a birdie on the fifth after a superb long bunker shot from an awkward stance but Harrington pegged him back again on the ninth.
The key hole for Harrington was the 11th where Dredge found the bunker off the tee and was forced to play out backwards on his way to a double-bogey five, while Harrington holed from 10 feet for a birdie two.

That allowed Harrington to cruise to his second victory in the event in four years with Dredge, Anthony Wall and American Edward Loar five shots back.

"The Order of Merit is a huge deal," said Harrington, who finished second in 2001 and 2002 and third the following two years.
"I hadn't won in Europe for two years, although I won twice in America last year, but it's great to come back and win.
"You never want to go a year without a win. It's very special to win and I'm really happy the way I did it."
South African Ernie Els fired in an eagle at the last to finish fifth at ten-under par.

18 1/2 to 9 1/2 victory over the United States at The K Club.

Amid unprecedented scenes of raw emotion, Europe won a third consecutive Ryder Cup for the first time in history, matching their record 18 ½ - 9 ½ victory of two years ago.
After taking a four point lead into the final day having won all four previous sessions, Ian Woosnam’s Team dominated the singles to deliver a crushing victory over the United States with rookie Henrik Stenson holing the winning putt moments after Luke Donald’s win ensured Europe retained the cup.

And then followed extraordinary scenes on the 16th as Darren Clarke won his match against Zach Johnson. Hundreds of fans poured onto the fairway to witness this most remarkable of victories. Only six weeks after Clarke lost his wife, Heather, to cancer and the tears flowed as the crowd cheered.

“It’s incredible,” said Clarke. “Detroit was unbelievable and to come here and to do this in Ireland was even more magical. It’s a once in a lifetime achievement and we are all proud to be part of a great European Team here in Ireland.”

Woosnam will go down in history as one of the great European Captains after inspiring 12 great players to a sensational victory.

“That’s 18 months of hard work and it’s all come down to winning this for a third time,” said Woosnam. “The guys have played fantastic. And for Darren to win was an incredible feeling for Darren, for me and for all the team and we all know why.”

Colin Montgomerie once again led from the front with a final hole win over David Toms in the top match, maintaining his unbeaten record in eight Ryder Cup singles matches.

Sergio Garcia, unbeaten before the final day, was beaten by an inspired Stewart Cink, who birdied seven of the 15 holes they played in his 4 and 3 victory. Tiger Woods put another point on the board for the Americans with a win 3 and 2 win over Robert Karlsson, ensuring the World Number One won three of his five matches. But the only other victory for the United States came right in the last group where Scott Verplank, aided by a hole-in-one on the 14th, got the better of Padraig Harrington.

David Howell took Europe within a point of retaining The Ryder Cup with a massive 5 and 4 victory over Brett Wetterich and when Donald won his match Europe could not lose. Ultimately it came to Stenson to secure the winning point with a 4 and 3 win over Vaughn Taylor.
But the celebrations didn’t end there. Victory for Clarke, a half for Paul McGinley after he showed great sportsmanship in conceding J.J. Henry’s final putt, and wins for José Maria Olazábal and Lee Westwood ensured Europe would win all five sessions for the first time and equal Europe’s biggest winning score.

Hi-Tec sponsored Ian Woosnam had given his team the option to not play, but was glad they all agreed to head out onto the course. Woosie said " I can understand a lot of guys might not want to go out and ruin their swings but this might be the calmest day for a while... one of the main reasons we came out is that 45 000 people had paid a lot of money to come and watch so I thought it was important we went at least to the practice ground, even if it was to just hit a few shots".

Ian and his team went out to practice to give the fans their money's worth. On Friday, the weather should have cleared ready for the competition to start.

The Ryder Cup is a 3 -Day competition at the K Club in Ireland, Dublin.

Everywhere they could possibly stick a poster, you will find one featuring Harrington. And, as Caroline, Padraig’s wife recently discovered, that really does mean everywhere.

Harrington chuckles when he recalls what happened when they were at Dublin airport recently. "I think she'd just about got used to seeing posters featuring me all around town, but then she went to the bathroom and there was one on the back of the toilet door," he said. "I think it fair to say she found that very off-putting."

Being the face of Irish golf brings its own distractions when the Ryder Cup comes to town for the first time.

Harrington could only dream it would all come to this when he turned pro 10 years ago. While Tiger Woods immediately set off at the same time in search of his destiny, Harrington was wondering whether he would be able to pay the bills.

As he wryly put it, in that modest way of his that explains his popularity: "The extent of my ambition was to keep improving and hope that one day I would be good enough to become a journeyman golfer."

What gave him hope then is the thing that makes him such a key member of the European team this week: his prowess at matchplay.

"I turned pro on the strength of what I did playing for Ireland at matchplay," he said. "I never lost a singles match and, given that all the players I was beating were turning pro, I thought: why not me? Even now, I think my focus is so much better at matchplay than at strokeplay.
European captain Ian Woosnam may spring a surprise but it will be a shock if Harrington's two partners on the first two days are not familiar faces — Colin Montgomerie and Paul McGinley.
"Two different types of partners you could not wish to meet," Harrington said, grinning.

'It's absolutely right the Cup is coming here'

"I've played with Monty in the last two Ryder Cups and he's great. All you have to do is make sure you keep his spirits up and you have a partner who is all but unbeatable.

"I think the K Club is an awesome course for a matchplay event, and far better than for a strokeplay occasion," he said. "The risk-reward element of the last three holes is going to make it very exciting. There couldn't be a better place to play it."

Hi-Tec’s Padraig Harrington cemented his place on the Ryder cup team by surging to the top of the leaderboard in Munich over the weekend after finishing tied on 273, 15 under par, on a day of high drama in Bavaria.

Harrington, who had reached the 72nd hole requiring a birdie four to snatch the title, found sand with his second shot and splashed out to 12 feet before watching his birdie putt slip just past the hole. However a par and a round of 69 were sufficient to ensure the Irishman found his way into the play-off with Henrik Stenson of Sweden and South African Retief Goosen.

Harrington, bunkered for a second time on the hole, splashed out close while Goosen two-putted for a birdie four. However it all became academic when Stenson added the BMW International Open to the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters title he won at the start of 2006 and to get his hands on a BMW title after missing out in a play-off to Gonzalo Fernandez-Castañon in the BMW Asian Open in April

Harrington's last round of 64, combined with Montgomerie and Howell both shooting 66, seems now to have ensured McGinley and Jose Maria Olazabal will take the ninth and 10th places in the European Ryder cup team.

That left Hi-Tec’s Ryder cup captain Ian Woosnam to pick his wildcards, which proved a tough decision. The Ryder cup captain went opted for Darren Clarke (Ire) and Lee Westwood (Eng) to complete his 12 man team to play at the K club which includes players: Paul Casey, Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, David Howell, Robert Karlsson, Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie, José Maria Olazábal and Henrik Stenson.

The Ryder Cup 06 will be held from the 22-24th September at the K club, Republic of Ireland.

The star-studded, celebrity swamped ALL*STAR CUP took place this weekend (26th-28th Aug) at the Celtic Manor Golf Resort in Wales where the 2010 Rycup will be held.

For those of you who missed the 20 hours of prime time ITV, ITV2 and ITV3 coverage, I wanted to highlight the extremely exciting exposure that HI-TEC - the Official Footwear Supplier and our wonderful golf shoes received.

Dr Paul Hurrion works with us at Hi-Tec Sports doing Bio-mechanic research and tests in the Golf Department.

He has been and continue to be a big part of Hi-Tec Golf's success and on the 22nd August, Dr Paul Hurrion became the proud father of his daughter, Isabelle Victoria Hurrion was born at 2 pm weighing 8 pounds.

We are happy to hear that both mother and daughter are well and healthy.

Woosie - " Reduce the Pain, Focus on the Game"

After back pain forced him to pull out of this month's French Open he opted to try a cure that the former Tour winner Michael King, another victim of the condition, recommended.

Ian has been suffering from ankylosing spondylitis and eighteen months ago he couldn't do 200 yards but he was playing in the Jersey Senior Open and told me the revolutionary new drug was working marvellously for him. A doctor at St Peter's hospital near Wentworth explained the injection was developed to fight rheumatoid arthritis; which is now also used for spondylitis. This injection costs around £200 a week.

Fredrik and his team are currently working with Ian Woosnam to make some slight changes to the C2 Comfort to enable Ian to walk longer and continue playing. We are looking to fine tune the PU Sockliner so that it gives him a better fit and result in higher comfort.

Keep reading for updates on this development and I know that you, Woosie fans, will be supporting and hoping he plays for many years to come and that he keeps improving his game.

Great start to the day - overnight a cutting from Golf Tips Magazine has come in - a full page feature on our new CDT Superpower shoes. We'll be delivering them first to the US "sunshine states" this autumn. This is a fantastic kick start to that!

We've also be studying today the costings from the factory on our new shoes for 2007. One of Hi-Tec's missions is to always provide outstanding value for money whatever product we put to market. To do this we analyse literally every piece on the shoe - can it be designed / manufactured more efficiently, is there a substitute material that either offers better performance or a lower cost etc. It's a long process - some shoes have over 50 different components and each one is analysed.
To cut a very long story short we hope to have our best ever value for money range out there for 2007!

So near and yet so far
We were so excited on Saturday as Karen Stupples raced up the leaderboard at the Weetabix British Women's Open to end the penultimate day in joint 2nd place. She played absolutely fantastically.
With great anticipation we gathered around the TV, but it simply was not to be. Karen just had one of those days where every bounce went against her and her game just wasn't on.
Nevertheless it was great for us to have the TV focused on her and that she did several in studio interviews. At the end of the day she finished in joint 10th and first Brit - still a decent performance.

Unbelievably we started discussions today for the 2008 collection. Seems a long way off, but the process does need to start now. We've got a lot of new shoes for 2007 that are getting a strong reaction from the store buyers, so it will be evolution rather than revolution.
We also finalised the designs for the shoes that Padraig Harrington will wear for the Ryder Cup. All players have to wear specific colours on specific days. We've attached the design cads for you to look at.

What a weekend for our players. Charl Schwartzel finished a fantastic second in the German Open. Ian Woosnam returned to great form. He's getting weekly injections to help control a disease in his back that has been restricting him for the last 5 years. He's feeling so much better and is in fantastic spirits leading up to the Ryder Cup. Padraig also had a steady week, not in top form just yet, but relieved that his Ryder Cup place is safe.
Schwartzel is wearing the V-Lite Typhoon II CDT , but Woosie played for the first time in a new shoe for 2007, the C2. Padraig is also playing in a new shoe - the CDT Superpower and early feedback is great.
